5 out of 5 stars Classic Playable Star Wars   October 24, 2009

This is a really great game. I'll go into details about facets of the game:

What's In The Box: Pretty much the same as any other PS2 game- disc and instruction manual. The manual is thorough in explaining gameplay, the awards system, use of heroes, and everything else.

Graphics: Exceptionally good graphics, for PS2 game. On an HD television, the colors are distinct and bright.

User Interface: The main menu is neat, with selections for Single Player, Multi-player (via internet connection) or Splitscreen. Under each if those menus are the game mode selections: Rise of The Empire, Galactic Conquest, or Instant Action.

Game Modes: There are three game modes in which you can play:

Instant Action:
You build multiple levels from the ground up. Select your map (Mos Eisley, Kashyyyk), select the era (Clone Wars, Galactic Civil War), and select the game mode (Capture The Flag, Hunt). This is the easiest game mode. And there is also a mode where you can use the Jedi's and the Sith.

Galactic Conquest:
You choose a faction (Clones, Stormtroopers), and then begin your conquest to attain control of the entire galaxy. This is basically a computerized version of the board game Risk. You can buy cool bonuses before levels such as enabling the hero for your faction, or extra ammo for your troops. You then have to choose where you want to attack. You can only move to a planet that you can reach within one movement of your fleet (personified by a starship of some sort). If you own a planet and have 1000 credits, you can build a fleet on that planet. You then attack. If you attack a planet that has an enemy fleet over it, you must first eliminate that fleet by winning a space battle. You then, on your next turn, can attack the planet itself. Land battles are in Conquest game mode (capture all enemy bases or eliminate all enemy troops and reinforcements). If you win, you earn credits for winning and also based on how many planets you now own. Use these credits to purchase bonuses and new recruits.

Rise Of The Empire:
This is the best game mode, in my opinion. It's basically story mode, starting with Geonosis, which is the training level, and goes all the way through, ending with Hoth. You play as Clones, then, like the movies, you transfer to the stark white armor of the Stormtroopers, and, from good guys to bad guys.
You basically play all the battles that the Clones/Stormtroopers won in the movies, along with some battles that aren't in the movies, basically "fake ones" that are in between Episodes III and IV. I like this mode primarily because there are objectives you must complete to progress, such as eliminating a Jedi leader. A very immersive game mode.

Playable Characters:
Includes Infantry and Jedi/Sith

Infantry:

Basic Infantry: Each faction has a basic infantry class. All of them have the same arsenal, with the exception of the Super Battle Droid. The arsenal is: a blaster rifle which takes 250 rounds. Good for basic combat. The blaster pistol has limitless ammo, but overheats, so I don't use it much. Good for if you're out of ammo for your rifle and need to make it to an ammo droid. There are also four thermal detonators, a.k.a. grenades, which provide an ample explosion. Good for clearing an area of enemies. Now for the Super Battle Droid. I don't use the droids often, but I've used them enough to have basic knowledge of the SBD's weapons. A wrist blaster, similar to a blaster rifle, tri-shot, a shotgun version of the blaster pistol, and wrist rockets, which is basically a jet-propelled grenade. I think they could have had a normal battle droid in place of this thing, and made you earn this guy. He's too good when controlled by a user.

Heavy Class: All factions are the same here. Each has a rocket launcher capable of taking on armored vehicles. Also has a blaster pistol and two thermal detonators.

Scout Class: All factions are the same here as well. Each carries a high-powered sniper rifle, effective from very long ranges by means of a powerful scope.
Carries a blaster pistol and two thermal detonators. A big plus when using this class is that they have deployable autoturrets that can effectively defend an area for you.

Engineer Class: All factions are the same. These guys are really good all-around soldiers. They have a fusion cutter which can repair vehicles and health and ammo droids. The cutter can also slice into enemy vehicles. Packs a shotgun which is the only close range wepon that can kill with one well-placed shot. Insted of thermals, these guys have det-packs, which are remote controlled explosives. You lay one, retreat to safe position, and then blow it up. An engineer can also act as a medic, giving health to those who need it.

Special Classes: All factions are different here. You must earn these high-grade troops by earning point. You acquire points by killing enemies or capuring a base.

Clones: These specials are the best in the game, I believe.

Clone Commander: Carries an awesome chaingun, which is a rapid fire machine gun, capable of clearing an area for other troops in a minimal amount of time. Has a hyped up version of the blaster pistol, dubbed the commando pistol. Also has a defense increase that will help when defending a base or something. A really cool feature of this guy is the recon droid. You can sit in a safe position, launch this guy, who you control, and effectively clear an area with it's self-destruct. Also capable of taking on tanks and whatnot with it's blaster cannon. You must earn 8 points to unlock the Clone Commander

Jet Trooper: As the name suggests, this guy has a jetpack, which really cool, as it enables you to fly to paces that could not normally reach. Carries an EMP launcher, whichnis basically a smaller version of the rocket launcher, with the same capabilities. Has a commando pistol and four thermals. You must earn 12 points to unlock the Jet Trooper

Stormtroopers: Not very good specials here.

Imperial Officer: Carries Geonosian sonic gun, a cross between a blaster rifle and EMP launcher. Has a mortar launcher, just a differnet type of EMP launcher, rage, whish gives damage increase to an soldiers near him, and a recon droid.

Dark Trooper: Has a jump-pack, which is similar to a jetpack, but gives you more of a high-powered jump than actual flight. Carries an arc caster, which is a lightning gun whose shot can jump from enemy to enemy. Also has a commando pistol and four thermals.

Rebels: Specials are adequate here.

Bothan Spy: Can sneak behind enemy lines, using invisibility, plant some timebombs to destroy enemy emplacements, and use his incinerator gun to fight his way back out. The invisiblity last about ten seconds, which is enough to sneak behind the enemy. The timebombs have an ample explosion, capable of eliminting anyone within a 5 foot radius or so. The incinerator gun takes away health initially, but leaves a cloud of dust around the victim that slowly eats away health for about 6 seconds.

Wookiee Warrior: One of my favorite specials! Carries a bowcaster, which can be charged up to inflict maximum damage. Also has a grenade launcher, four thermal detonators, and recon droid.

Droids: Decent specials here.

Magnagaurd: Carries a bulldog blaster, which is essentially one up from a commando pistol. radiation launcher, similar to a Geonosian sonic blaster, neuro poison, like a thermal detonator, and recon droid.

Droideka: Rolls along the ground instead of walking, so can move around much more quickly. Has dual repeating blasters, and a hard-to-penetrate shield.

Heroes: Lightsaber-wielding, Force-using leaders on the battlefield. Can jump to incredible heights. Some heroes have guns.

Jedi:

Mace Windu: My favorite! Has Force push, which can kill normal infantry, but not other heroes. Also saber throw, which can eliminate most any body when aimed correctly.
Aayla Secura: Has two lightsabers, Force pull, and lightsaber throw. I like Force Pull better than Force Push because you can pull an enemy to you, then slice him to ribbons!
Obi-Wan Kenobi: Has same powers as Mace Windu.
Luke Skywalker: Has same powers as Mace as well.
Ki-Adi-Mundi: Same powers as Aayla Secura.
Yoda: Force Pull and Push
Princess Leia: Carries a sporting blaster, which is a pistol version of a sniper rifle, plus a force field emitter that will give any nearby a force field. Has four thermals.
Han Solo: Has a special pistol. I'm not sure what it's called. Basically a hero version of an engineer.
Chewbacca: Has a bowcaster, guidable rockets, and timebombs.

Sith:

Darth Vader: Has Force Choke and saber throw.
The Emperor: Has Force Choke and Force Lightning.
Count Dooku: Same powers as the Emperor.
Dark Side Anakin Skywalker: Same powers as Darth Vader:
Darth Maul: Has a slick dual-bladed lightsaber, Force Push and saber throw.
Boba Fett: Has a neat flamethrower, blaster pistol, and detpacks.
Jango Fett: Has essentially the same equipment as Boba.

Things You Will Encounter In Levels:

Droids: In every level there will be several medic and ammo droids. They provide health and ammo for both sides. If destroyed, an engineer can repair them.
Gun Emplacements: In every level there is some sort of gun emplacement. There are blaster turrets, beam turrets, heavy anti-tank guns, Hoth Dish Turrets (Hoth only), Hoth Turrets (Hoth only), and Geonosian sonic turrets (Geonosis only).

Vehicles: Every faction has different vehicles, all of which you can occupy. There are heavy armored vehicled that serve as a mobile base, tanks that provide troop support, and speeders, which are good for covering a lot of groung in very short time.

This is a good arcade style game. It's very infantry-based, and the hero's powers are very limited. If you want a game where Force powers abound, but there is no infantry use (except by the enemy), check out Star Wars: The Force Unleashed.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorites   July 24, 2009
Charles Allen (Knoxville, TN USA)
I loved the first Battlefronts and decided to get this one. It is much better than the first. Not just graphics but just about everything. It's easier to get around and do campaigns or whatever but I personally had a blast flying the ships when it came to space battles and trying to conquer solar systems. I wasn't just running around shooting all the time. There's some things I don't like, of course, but because I've played it so and had so much fun playing this game since I got it, I have to say it's one of the best I've ever played and give it 5 full stars.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good.   July 8, 2009

I am no big fan of star wars but this game is okay. I started off in the story mode but as i got further i did not really want to continue because it was hard and very confusing as like the first one but i gave this one a try because everyone said it was amazing. The graphics are okay but not the modern day war game and in third person, and the sound glitches up allot but not as much if it is brand new. As i saw how hard this game was i just went on the quick battle and battled on it to get allot better and i decided just to do that unstead of continuing the story mode. As i got pretty good i started to use cheats on the quick battle so i would enjoy it better. It is very fun to go on multiplayer because you can battle in a big arena against each other or on the same team or just by yourself. This is a very hard and confusing game but even me not a big fan of star wars like the quick battle mode. It has a great online feature like the first one too and fun and funny because of the things you can do online...Great game for multiplayer but hard and can be fun story mode.
