Daytonaaaaaaaaaaaaaa December 5, 2006 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I wrote a review that I have deleted now about this game not running on Windows XP. I was wrong about that, it turned out I had a bad disc that wouldn't install right. I now have a copy that works and so my old review has now been deleted.
Daytona USA deluxe.
At first glance I thought I was going to dislike this game, the graphics seemed a little too different to the original that I was used to. And the choice of multiple cars with different setups did not seem right to me.
But after some play, I found myself enjoying this title. The graphics may not be that of the arcade or even the original PC Daytona, but the game play is definitely there and it just takes a little bit of getting used to before you see the game for what it is instead of trying to compare it to another.
First off, the options. The 3 original tracks/circuits of the original are still here and run pretty much the same. There is also 3 new tracks that had only been seen on an arcade follow up called Daytona To The Maxx, which I am not sure if it was released outside of Japan or what the story with it is, but those tracks are now included in this version.
It took me a bit of time to work out the 3 new tracks, as in where to stop and where to skid, how to go about it etc... but that was just due to me never playing those tracks before, and I remember it was the same story with the original tracks, every one smashed into the final wall of the beginner track on there first go before you work out how to slide around it.
After some time playing it, the 3 new tracks are a refreshing race that gives you some new challenges, and they do not take long to master. 2 of them where a bit slow, you have to really hit the breaks and slow down on some corners to get around, but there decent tracks that you can get used to quickly. Another new option now is once you choose a track, you get to pick what time you race, there is normal in the day, then ones like midnight, dawn, and a heap of options to race at night in the dark, or at night with the track lit up etc... quite frankly I always choose the regular daytime, but you might enjoy a change for something else.
Secondly, there is now a few cars to race as. There are two beginner cars with medium grip, speed etc... and then some mid way cars, to fast cars with slow acceleration.. you pretty much just need to find the car that suits you and have fun racing as it.
Once you have selected your car, you get the familiar Manual or Automatic option. then you can customize your car a bit by choosing some handling and height options. This really threw me off for a bit, i had no idea how to set up the cars and what this stuff actually did. But, I will give you a tip, when ever you pick a car, leave the suspension soft, the handling quick, and both the front and rear heights all the way up to the right side. And your car will handle and move the way it should. I played this game after reading cheats on how to unlock extra cars and thought it was impossible until I realized it was just me setting the car up wrong.
Hidden Cars: Put the games option on to NORMAL and come first in all the tracks. Very easy to do once you set the car up right. Then you can unlock the Daytona car.
The Daytona Car is 5 star handling, grip, acceleration and speed and is the best CAR in the game. It was a real treat to see this car, as it's decals are that of the original Arcade car. So it looked familiar and i was psyched to use it. It takes some getting used to as it goes fast, doesn't skid around corners and the handling is very sensitive.
The First UMA Horse. Put the game on HARD, and come first in all tracks (use the Daytona Car to breeze through it) and you unlock a brown horse. It's decent, but only in the mid range, so it slides and doesn't handle the best... but the thing about the horse is you can drive over grass without slowing down, so cut across half of the first track and the hill of the 3rd for great shortcuts.
The Second UMA Horse. Put the difficulty back to NORMAL, and race as the first horse, come first in all races and you will have a grey horse now with 5 star every thing. You can get a lap time of 13 seconds, maybe under if your good enough, on the first track by doing the shortcut. And absolutely annihilate your previous time records.
The other options are a time attack mode, do you best to get the best time, then see if you can beat it... pretty boring.
Multi player, connect with a friend to play 2 player.
and 2 player; split screen mode. Something the original PC Daytona lacked.
Overall: At first I did not like this game, but after I took some time to get used to it, figure things out, get used to the new stuff, this game rocks! Now that I have unlocked all the cars, it's replay value is not as high as it was... I might play it 2 player or online for some competition, but I think that is about the only downfall now, that on one player, it's just going around in the same circles. even if it is in mirror mode or whatever.
The other thing I don't like, you can't do anything to this game. I like to customize games to keep the interest up, it would be cool to maybe make a cars decals look the way you want or maybe even have a choice of something other then stock cars: games like GTA are very popular and have high replay values because you can add new things to it, car wise, you can add K.I.T.T, the General Lee, Regular On Road Cars, Super Cars, Somethign crazy like a car from the disney movie CARS, Custom Tracks etc... this is what Daytona needed, options or downloads to get new cars, custom paint jobs and a track editor.
Apart from that: Great Game, the best Daytona USA you can get on the PC, very underrated, and hours of fun.
