1 out of 5 stars Lockup Heaven Blunder Alert-   March 8, 2010
T. R. Hall

Non-API addressing has been rude software programming for at least a decade. I've owned Chessmaster since 5000 for Windows 95. I'd forgotten until reminded that process crashing was the reason I stopped using 7000. In my old age, I decided to stave off Alzheimer's by getting back into an old passion, Chess. I've apparently upgraded from that moderately irritating purgatory to interminable hardware lockup heaven despite doing everything recommended and more to try to mitigate this problem on a dual-processor system that far exceeds the system requirements. Perhaps it's the multiple raid arrays with other slaved raid servers being polled on the network. My computer technical expertise is very high, including the good sense from experience not to tear up my previously highly stable systems and network to try to pursue the last line left, four pieces down. Whatever the cause, the clear intent to disrespect the software-programming interface may serve as sufficient warning that this may not be a wise choice. Knowing what I now know, I wouldn't want a free copy of this program. If I need to build a dedicated system to run a Chess program, it won't be for this one. On principle. Fair blunder-alert warning delivered.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Chess Game   January 31, 2010
Captainbob (Atlanta)
I played chess for many years, when younger, and decided to get into the game again. The Chessmaster 11 is an excellent way to get back into Chess, as well as learn it from the beginning, if you have never played. I visit many chess sites such as [...] where there are almost a million active chess players, and Chessmaster has an excellent reputation as a good piece of software, to play and learn chess.

I have a feeling that many of the negative reviews are from people that don't really understand chess.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT STEP BY STEP TUTORIAL   January 21, 2010
Stevens (New York)
This PC version of Chessmaster is the only Chess video game I have found that has a detailed step by step tutorial for beginner, intermediate and advanced players. It is a REAL TREASURE.

As a beginner, right now I am learning about "Defense"--how to protect your pieces, how to eliminate the defender of the important piece you are planning to capture, etc., etc.

Make sure you have internet connection when loading this program into your computer. This will allow a patch for the game to be downloaded automatically.

2 out of 5 stars Not the best choice for a chess software   January 18, 2010
montecarlostar (Ruston, LA USA)
When I bought this software I was very excited and I thought it was going to be really cool. But my experience got more and more displeasing and now I don't really play it much at all.

I think the worst part of it all is the internet gaming. The box came with a key that never worked, I complained, and all that the customer support personnel could do was tell me that I was entering the code wrong. Believe me, I entered the code 10,000 different times, I couldn't have it wrong. Then I joined a forum and I noticed that many other people had the same problem and they didn't get it solved either.

Some of the boards are kind of cool, but I always felt the software to be a little hard, not very friendly at all.
I liked the training part, though. The advises are very cool and I did learn some strategy and stuff.

Overall, it's not terrible, but I am sure there are many better softwares around.

5 out of 5 stars Chessmaster: GM Edition   December 19, 2009
Wayne H. Spon (silver spring, md)
Very good program for beginners and intermediate chessplayers. I can't write for more advanced players. I teach the game to grade school children and I use the academy sessions for lessons. The cd was delivered promptly and in excellent condition.
