Amazon.com Review Re-create the tactics of the great Civil War generals at Gettysburg and Shiloh with the Great American Battles Of The Civil War two-disk set from Mindscape. The software loads easily, providing intuitive game controls. Though the manual is a bit skimpy, you'll pick up the rules quickly, finding yourself maneuvering units just like Grant and Lee. The emphasis here is on small-scale tactical combat, so you'll move individual leaders, infantry and cavalry regiments, and artillery batteries on hex maps to re-create particular scenarios from either battle. Play against the computer in one of two modes (all opposing units visible or only in line of sight) or challenge a friend. (Unfortunately, network play isn't an option.) The play is simple and fairly quick, and the graphics and sounds are OK--if comparatively unimpressive. Importantly, the balance between realism and playability is good. Serious war gamers will probably want to go for something more intense, like Sid Meier's Gettysburg. But for a quick, easy-to-learn tactical simulation, Great American Battles of the Civil War will do just fine. --Rob Lightner

| Customer Reviews: A Civil War Masterpiece April 29, 2003 Blake L Strickler (Chicago IL United States) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This game is a Civil War classic that I would highly recommend. I have spent many enjoyable hours playing this game repeatedly as North or South against the Computer and against my friends. The Map is easily readable and the units are simplistic yet well organized and researched. This is not a game for those novices who play just for the cool sound effects and big explosions, this is a game for gentlemen who wish to actually be challenged. It requires critical thought and an ability to think ahead (almost like Chess). I highly recommend playing agianst friends who share your passion for real startegy games as they too will be able to appreciate the games finer points and offer a greater challenge than a normal AI could. I highly recommend this game!
A stupid game December 29, 2000 Nicole (Ball Ground, GA USA) 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
this game is very dumb. I would want to get sid mieir's gettysburg. the game doesn't even show the guys move, it shows little guys just standing there.
A skimpy manual??? November 18, 2000 9 out of 11 found this review helpful
What manual? I ordered this for my husband, a huge Civil War buff, and thought he would love it. Unfortunately, there were no instructions. He can't figure out how to even play the game. We were very disappointed. I would not recommend this game to anyone.
