4 out of 5 stars VMWare Fusion3   March 6, 2010

Acad Vmware Fusion 3 Mac Os X

I am trying this product on a MacBok Pro and found it to work quite well
without any major problems. My windows pc is running Windows XP
Professional as the operating system. Vmware had no problems
migrating the operating system and all my programs into the Mac.

It was necessary for me to purchase a new license from Microsoft
for Windows XP( as my PC was running an OEM version).

I found purchasing a new license more convenient than doing
a new installation from scratch and then reinstalling all my
software and documents. The VM had no problems connecting
to my wireless network.

1 out of 5 stars Buyer beware   March 2, 2010

I am very disappointed in this product. I bought it to migrate my PC with Windows XP onto my new Mac. Right off the bat the touted Migration Assistant doesn't work. Numerous exchanges with Email tech support revealed the Migration Assistant often doesn't work so we tried several work arounds. None of those worked either. At the heart of the problem is the fact that I, like many folks, have a PC that came with the Windows operating system installed by the original equipment manufacturer (OEM). Evidently Fusion recognizes that and won't allow you to transfer your operating system to the Mac to avoid breaking use agreements. I guess I can understand that to a point but if I am transferring my Windows operating system to a new computer and plan to stop using the old computer I am still just using it on one computer. Anyway if VMware knows this is the case they should warn consumers up front that this program won't work with OEM installed operating systems.
So it looks like the only way I can make this program work for me is to go out and buy a new version of Windows, load it onto the Mac via Fusion then load all my files and software into the virtual machine by hand. I recommend you not waste your money on this dog and try something else.

1 out of 5 stars With XP, More Trouble than it's Worth   March 2, 2010

I ran Fusion 1 and 2 with Windows XP with few problems on my iMac. When I upgraded to Snow Leopard, Fusion 2 slowed down markedly on start up. I though that by upgrading to Fusion 3, I could get some of the performance back. Instead, Fusion 3 corrupted my Mac operating system and continually crashed the Finder. Thank goodness for Time Machine.

Fusion 3 seems to hog system resources and appears to be dangerously unstable. Use with caution.

5 out of 5 stars Windows runs better on a Mac   February 26, 2010

After years of suffering with Microsoft and PC products like Dell, I finally made the move to a Mac. Tired of slow and buggy OS's, I knew I would be happier with a different OS. But I had the problem of having mission critical software for my business that does not run on Mac's OS. Fusion not only runs the software on my Mac, it runs Windows better, faster, and with no crashes. I have full use of my program and its access to printers, network, and other hardware works just fine. Installation of the Windows XP OS as a virtual machine went more smoothly than my last clean install of Windows on my Dell. No more waiting for hours to boot up not shut down. An A+ for Fusion. Well documented support on-line and if I needed it (which I didn't) access to real people for help as well. Good bye frustration.

5 out of 5 stars Hardware makes all the difference in VM performance   February 26, 2010
K. Breit (Minneapolis, MN)
I had previously installed VMware Fusion 3 with Windows XP SP3 on a Mac Mini (Late 2006) Intel Core Duo (1.83 GHz, 2 MB L2 cache, 667 MHz FSB, 2GB Memory) while waiting for my iMac 27" to arrive and the performance was tolerable, but not pleasant. I certainly wasn't going to ditch my PCs if I needed to get something done for more than 5 minutes.

I finally received my iMac 27" Quad-Core Intel Core i7 (2.8GHz, 8 MB L3 cache, 1066 MHz FSB, 8GB Memory). I promptly installed VMware Fusion 3 with Windows 7 Professional 64-bit and allocated 3GB of memory to the VM. I was absolutely blown away by the performance. It made my new laptop from work, an HP 6930p Intel Core 2 Duo P8700 (2.53 GHz, 3 MB L2 cache, 1066 MHz FSB, 4GB Memory) running Windows XP SP3, seem like chop liver.

Running Adobe Photoshop CS4 and Google SketchUp 7 in the VM is smooth and flawless. I found it hard to find any meaningful difference in performance with the Adobe Photoshop CS4 and Google SketchUp 7 running natively on Mac OS X 10.6.

When I need access to an application or fileshare at work, I simply use Remote Desktop Connection to connect to the work laptop over VPN. Not having to lug the laptop home has been another pleasant surprise of using VMware Fusion 3.

I've gladly reclaimed some serious desk space by ditching a personal PC, my work laptop docking station, and the Mac Mini by consolidating onto the iMac 27". The bonus is how quiet my home office is without some many fans running and cooler too.

I turned in my geek beanie cap nearly a decade ago and now manage IT projects full-time, but I still appreciate a pleasant computing experience like everyone else. I've used a variety of emulation and VM products over the last 15 years and this is the first combination of hardware and software I found usable on a daily basis. My recommendation is to buy the fastest hardware you can afford and give VMs a shot.
