5 out of 5 stars Go for it!   May 5, 2010

This is a nice piece of software.

For those of you who are new to music notation software: you use the mouse to enter notes into staves; you select note length (and any accidentals) from a menu. Once you move to a new bar or measure, or to a different part, the measure you were working on is completed with rests. You can select staccato or accents or arpeggiation or whatever using a menu; mark a barline with a repeat (both at beginnings of repeats and at the ends); first and second endings, dynamics (soft and loud), and metronome marks. Most delightfully, the software "plays" the music back for you, using MIDI and your PC speakers, automatically, on request. (There is a "play" menu, with play/pause, stop, etc.)

For those who have used notation software: PrintMusic2009 works as well as any, and the Mp3 files it creates are a little better than those created by PrintMusic2010, which might have something to do with the MIDI instruments loaded into the two different machines I use the software on. I've had a great old time, creating all sorts of chamber and orchestral works, and having the MIDI system play them back for me. (Some of these are on YouTube, after I have made them into video clips.)

There is a weird problem with layers. You're allowed up to 4 layers per staff; there are little tabs at the bottom that move you from one layer to another. (This way you can have several voices on the same staff, e.g. tenor and bass.) Unfortunately, I haven't figured out how to copy two voices from separate staves into a single staff, e.g. for a keyboard accompaniment. Should be a no-brainer, but apparently copy and paste only works with all layers selected at once. Once I learn to select just one layer, I'll be totally in business.

Obviously, not having experience with other music notation software (except briefly with Capella 1995), I can't speak to the issue of what other software does better then PrintMusic. The printed scores come out looking just nice. There are the usual annoyances when notating, e.g. dotted notes which alternate with undotted notes: the dotting is sticky, which means that once you turn it on, it stays on. So each pair of dotted and undotted note has to be individually dotted and undotted. When going full blast in compound time, obviously, everything is cool.

Well, that's as much as I can remember.

4 out of 5 stars Almost everything I needed . . .   December 8, 2009

Finale PrintMusic is a great supplement to the main Finale program. I bought PrintMusic hoping it would create piano reductions for 4-part chorale music--as Finale does. (As an accompanist, reading open score is a killer!) Unfortunately, it doesn't. However, I found I can create the choral piece, transfer it to my flash drive, and take it to school. Then I load it into Finale and it takes just a few seconds to create the piano reduction. Of course, this is a bit cumbersome, but it beats paying hundreds of dollars extra for this one feature. It would be nice if the people at Finale mentioned somewhere in their advertising or comparisons of products that this feature is only available in their most expensive program. Otherwise, I've been extremely happy with my purchase and would definitely recommend the software.

2 out of 5 stars Help utility is horrendous   September 26, 2009

This software is quirky. After a few bars the notes started showing blue on the screen. It looks like this means that you can't edit them. Or may be after playback you can't edit. I wish you good luck trying to find a solution in the manual. I tried: entered "can't edit". Got a menu with 153 items (yes one hundred and fifty-three). Clicking on any menu item gives you several pages' worth of material that has nothing to do with your question. Try again: may be I locked the application inadvertently? Try "unlock". Response: no topics found. Try the index, item "locks". It just talks about "items that have been locked", but not how to do/undo this. OK, I found it! Go to Utilities / Fit measures / Remove system locks. That'll do it, right? Fat chance! I gave up.

5 out of 5 stars The right features and the right price.   September 23, 2009

I have used the old "free" version of Finale Notepad for many years and really enjoyed using it. I play a lot of church music and arrange BASS guitar lines for songs as I play both BASS and Guitar. I finally decided to upgrade to one of the "pay for" Finale products to get some of the better features that are offered. I settled on getting Print Music because of the features/price combination and I am not disappointed. Being able to link the chords to notes, put in multiple verses, the more advanced copy/paste/translation functions are all worth the price of admission from Amazon. This software allows you to transcribe pretty complex combinations of multiple endings, key changes, etc. with ease. The even more advanced features that you get with Allegra or the full Finale are not really all that useful for what I do and the cost uptick is significant so Print Music hits the Feature/Price sweet spot for me. This was a very good purchase.

Product works flawlessly. After I downloaded the update files for the scanner I was amazed at how well it imports scanned music. I was was importing single staff music for a woodwind and I have a pretty good scanner (Epson perfection 3200 photo). Scans imported well both directly and when I saved scans in photoshop as TIFF files. Data entry is fast also. I have used a midi keyboard and was pleased whith the speed of entry. The help section is very complete but be sure to read the entire section on each topic. Some info is a bit buried. "Cut time" is not found in a search but is explained in "time signature" entry. All in all I am very pleased. I used the free download available on the net and was glad to give them my money.
