Doesn't provide MIDI power March 12, 2010 Rodmusic This is a nice, simple and compact interface, that works perfectly well for everyday MIDI tasks. It has one drawback that may be a deal-breaker for some users: It does not transmit MIDI Power. (Midi Power is like USB or phantom power, but for MIDI devices). This shortcoming makes this E-MU XMIDI 1x1 useless for devices that run off MIDI power like the MIDI Solutions boxes. And some devices look for that power during a sysex dump even if the device itself runs off external power. I was unable to use this interface to update my TC-Helicon Harmony M's OS or program my MIDI Solutions Router. I switched to my Yamaha UX16 USB-MIDI interface, which does provide MIDI power, and I was back in business.
This interface works fine for all other MIDI uses, like recording into a sequencer or triggering sounds on modules. The driver installed on Window XP easily and I was up and running quickly. It's so compact that it takes up almost no space in my laptop case. It's the cheapest one out there and you won't need to spend any extra money on USB and MIDI cables.
Just be aware that if you need MIDI power from your USB-MIDI interface, this one is not for you. I didn't know this until I wasted a great deal of time trying to use it for a firmware update on my TC-Helicon pedal. You might have trouble using this interface with some of your gear and not even realize MIDI power is the issue. If you didn't buy this already, spend the extra money for the Yamaha UX16 which does send MIDI power, just in case your device needs it.
Not good for SysEx on Roland MT-32 March 11, 2010 Clarence Sparrow (Cali) I used this device with the Roland MT-32 on Windows XP. With either the built-in Microsoft driver or the latest EMU driver downloaded from their website, SysEx messages were not conveyed to the MT-32, resulting in music playing with incorrect instruments. Currently, I am using the M-Audio Uno sans driver and having no problems.
Does not work for me March 1, 2010 M. Bryant (US) Bought it for a MIDI keyboard...tried to connect it for a hour with no success. Looks like people are able to use with theirs, but just be sure to keep the packaging just in case.
Buy this and save yourself extra money!! February 24, 2010 S. Darling (LEONARD, TEXAS, US) Order arrived by US MAIL to my PO BOX in 4 days in a nicely padded envelope. Buy this excellent interface and save yourself at least (...) by not buying the m-audio or cakewalk versions. Windows (and yes even Vista and Windows 7(I'm running the beta Windows 7 Enterprise 65 bit version and also 32 bit Vista home professional) will recognize your USB EMU XMidi right away. You can go to emu and download drivers and a pdf of the user manual. REMEMBER, out is IN and IN is out....that's right, hook the labeled blue labeled "IN" connector to your "Midi Out" connection. Think of it this way, the blue connector is labeled correctly, it's an "IN"put for midi data. Other than that, NO or very little latency (take that cakewalk!!) Yes, I replaced a lost cakewalk usb midi interface that I had previosuly purchased as part of the Cakewalk Usb home studio package (I think still (...)). The software is good, but the cable just isn't as good as quality as this one is. Buy it, and save yourself money and headaches!! FYI, here is the link to the manual and drivers -(...) While you are there, you should download the FREE Proteus VX!
Great Midi USB Cable February 17, 2010 Mark Bosky (Kansas City, MO) Works like a charm. Using it to attach my midi Casio keyboard to my Windows 7 Desktop.
