Product Description The Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router is three devices in one. The Wireless Access Point lets you connect both Wireless-G (802.11g at 54Mbps) and Wireless-B (802.11b at 11Mbps) devices to the network. There's also a built-in 4-port full-duplex 10/100 Switch to connect your wired-Ethernet devices together. Connect four PCs directly, or attach more hubs and switches to create as big a network as you need. The Router function ties it all together and lets your whole network share a high-speed cable or DSL Internet connection. All your computers can print on a shared printer connected anywhere in the house. Your computers can share all kinds of music, digital picture, and document files. The Wi-Fi Protected Setup feature makes it easy to configure your wireless devices. Just push the button on the Router and on your other Wi-Fi Protected Setup enabled wireless device to automatically create a WPA2 connection that protects your data and privacy with up to 256-bit industrial-strength encryption. The Router can serve as a DHCP Server, has a powerful SPI firewall to protect your PCs against intruders and most known Internet attacks, supports VPN pass-through, and can be configured to filter internal users' access to the Internet. AWESOME January 6, 2009 I wanted a router for my son's laptop. After talking to my PC tech he said he's had the best luck with Linksys. Let me tell ya....it was so easy to set up even a mother can do it....4 steps and we were wireless. We are able to use it on any floor in the house. Give it a try, worth the money.
Am totally pleased with my Linksys WRT54G2 Wireless-G Broadband Router January 6, 2009 Comes with dvd instruction - really easy installation! Wireless connection is perfect. I highly recommend this product.
Good Customer Service January 6, 2009 When I got the router, I realized the CD installation didn't support Mac. So I had to call customer service, and they got me on the internet within 15 minutes. Ever since then, I've had great networking all around my house =] Still wished the CD installation supported mac computers, though. It would have probably been easier to set up my home network with it!
Overall, I give this router 5 stars, regardless of the trouble I had to go through to set up and get the network going. It hasn't given me any trouble, it looks nice & sleek, it doesn't take up much room, & it's been providing internet to my desktop, laptop, ipod, and wii all throughout the house! Definitely recommend it, especially for the price =)
Works Great! January 5, 2009 This is my first router for my home, and it works great. Took less than 5 minutes to get it up and running. Very easy to use!
user unfriendly, frustrating, worthless to us January 5, 2009 Purchased this just to connect my girlfriend's brand new HP Windows Vista 64bit laptop to the cable modem wirelessly. All she wanted it to do was eliminate the cable running from the wall/modem to her desk when using the laptop at her desk, and also take the laptop out on the balcony (12 feet away) on occasion.
Twelve hours of diligent work later, the thing is just an expensive and unneeded extension cord/paper weight. I tried EVERYTHING to get the wireless working. I worked through all the settings on Vista and in the Wireless manager application for the router many many times. Poured through Google searches. Contacted tech support. Reset dozens of times.
I'm pretty stunned at how difficult this is. I mean, we're trying to connect ONE laptop to ONE always-on broadband modem through the very latest version of Windows Vista (all patches and updates installed) so we can eliminate eight feet of cord. HOW HARD IS THIS?? I would have thought for SURE by NOW -- 2009 -- there would be some type of plug and play mechanism for this very simple wireless task. I'm relatively savvy and don't mind configuring a few items at all but this is simply absurd. I expected 20-30 minutes and success, not twelve hours and failure.
I don't know whether to blame Microsoft and Cisco equally, or just Microsoft, or just Cisco. I'm a PC user, but this experience in futility really makes me wonder -- would accomplishing this type of task have been possible on an Apple computer?
Special mention goes to Linksys/Cisco's tech support -- absolutely useless. The PDF manual is likewise extremely lacking in explanation.
I guess we'll just spring for a twenty foot network cable and put up with the stupid cord always being draped across the floor. Yay. Thanks Microsoft and Linksys, maybe in ten more years this task will be doable.
