Great Product January 4, 2009 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I had been in the market for a mini netbook for some time. I had tried the ASUS 7inch which was much too small and had a very awkward keyboard.
Later, I purchased a Everex StepNote from TigerDirect, off Lease. Fortunately at that time, I purchased a replaement warranty. When the computer crashed 3 months later, TigerDirect sent me a gift card for the amount of the purchase price of the Everex (499.99) and I turned right around and ordered this item from Amazon.
I can't really say anything bad about it. It is so quiet you don't even realize it is on. The keyboard and characters are all where they are supposed to be. I turned it on this morning and it's 5:56 pm and the "low battery" indicator just clicked on. I stays cool. Light weight and easy to carry, love the blue color. However, with the blue color, fingerprints abound. I'm also thinking of buying one for my mother.
The only thing I did was add MicroSoft Works 9 and a laser mouse, specifically, VX Nano Cordless Laser Mouse. You can pick it up here on Amazon as well.
Great machine, battery life January 3, 2009 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
After buying and returning three Asus 1000HA units, I purchased the Samsung NC10. I purchased my first and only NC10 unit a few weeks ago - it's definitely been a great netbook choice. The problems I had with the 1000HA (crackly speakers, loose housing around battery) do not exist with the NC10. Features I especially like about the NC10:
Battery life - I have reached as much as 9 hours and 20 minutes when fully charged (9 is an extreme, more routinely I get about 7 hours and 30 minutes) Lightweight - ultra portable Slim profile (fits easily in my tote) Sturdy build, great overall feel Bluetooth - though I still don't know what I'd use it for Easy memory upgrade (did it myself) Keyboard a great size/layout
For those who have the NC10 and are experiencing jerky video play, try this: create a new user (mine is called "movies") that you'll use only for watching videos. Disable as much programming as you can on that user profile. I did this on my NC10 and now I can watch hulu.com without any problems. If try to watch videos with my other user account, I experience the jerkiness. I also figured out how to share the c drive of my desktop PC on my home network so not having an internal disc drive on the netbook is no longer a problem.
Amazing! January 2, 2009 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Amazing netbook. I got it quickly. It looks nice, feels like it's good quality, and runs extremely well. The battery life shocks and amazes me on it. The keyboard is very nice to type on, the few keys that got moved or shortened make sense, and feel good to use in their modified state. The wireless conectivity is excellent as well. Nothing negative to say about this. It's small, light, quiet, has lots of go power. I would recommend an upgrade of the bag, as the fabric one that comes with the netbook isn't too secure.
Great things come in small packages. December 31, 2008 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is my first Netbook, although I have worked with "portable" computers since they were the size of, designed like, and weighed as much as a mechanics tool box.
I have been using it exclusively now for about two weeks and I couldn't be happier. It is very peppy, the keyboard is exceptionally comfortable and it is portable enough to stick in my hydro-pack for those days I feel like working in the great beyond. The battery lasts for the entire day+ as long as I shut the lid when I am not engaged or I'm not wired to an external drive that sucks power.
The only draw backs are so minimal that they are only worthy of mention in that there is an easy solution. The touchpad is small and takes some getting use to, but that is easily eliminated by using a mouse and turning the touchpad off (Function/F10). The screen is small but headers and task bars and be easy toggled on/off (F11), as was pointed out to me by another reviewer. The speakers do leave something to be desired, but they will do in a pinch. The solution however is a good Bluetooth headset, as the built-in Bluetooth offers easy paring with several devices. Partitioning the harddrive on initial set up was not something that I was familiar with so I let it do its own thing and the 50/50 split works well for me as it offers another level of organization (I like my ducks in a row, otherwise I get lost).
I can't offer a great technical review, as I am a computer user, both in my personal life and my professional life, not a technician. This machine is however worth looking into from a user level, bigger, more powerful, and with all the gadgets is not always the way to go. I just wanted a computer that I didn't have to share with anyone, that I could leave on my nightstand for insomia induced inspiration, take with me and have enough juice for the day without taking the power cord or crashing into people with a heavy, oversized bag, and I didn't have to break the bank for the system or necessary add-ons that are only "necessary" once a year(borrow them). I do have an external HDD where I keep my photos, music, memory intensive programs, and personal files, but that stays at home. And somewhere in the house there is an external CD/DVD if I really feel incline to watch a movie or need to download a new program.
If you work on the go there couldn't be a better solution than a Netbook and from my limited experience, Samsung has it figured out, This is a keeper and by all means an acceptable primary computer.
the best netbook currently on the market with few flaws December 31, 2008 7 out of 8 found this review helpful
I've had the blue NC10 for a week and am 90% satisfied. I would buy it again simply because there currently isn't a better netbook at that price. Samsung really thought well about every detail with a few omissions discussed below. If Lenovo S10 came with a good looking battery lasting as long as NC10 (don't hold your breath on that) I would switch without hesitation. Samsung is a good looking netbook but the Lenovo just looks a bit sexier to me with its slim screen borders and the rectangular rugged desing plus I haven't heard complains about its speakers being weak like Samsung. Apparently I chose the long lasting battery of Samsung (6-8 hours) over the sexier design of Lenovo - who needs a sexier looking netbook when it can't last longer than 2 hours :) In further comparison NC10 has bluetooth but no expansion slot, Lenovo S10 sold in USA usually comes without bluetooth but has an expansion slot. I bet you've heard of the spacious and comfortable keyboard of Samsung NC10 - it feels as comfortable as a full size laptop - another reason to buy Samsung. The support of Samsung seems great so far, the manual for the netbook is clearly written, every time I had a small problem how to use the netbook, the answer was found inside. There is a big community of NC10 owners at sammynetbook dot com where you can find lots of tips, solutions and tweaks.
Having said that Samsung NC10 is very satisfying in almost any aspect, let me mention the few flaws starting with the minor nuisances:
1. The touchpad is a little short vertically. As a workaround disable the extra functions like horizontal and vertical scroll and the 'pinch' function (two finger zooming) that don't work well on such a small touchpad. Keep the 'momentum' function which makes the mouse pointer glide 'by inertia' like an ice skater after you flick the touchpad and lift your finger. I can cover the whole screen in one glide. I got so used to 'momentum' that now I consider the usual touchpad operation on my Presario laptop sluggish; I had to install it on Presario too. In addition install the program TwoFingerScroll which imitates a mouse wheel scroll when you drag two fingers vertically on the trackpad; there are modded Synaptics drivers that include the two finger scroll in the settings of the touchpad, google those if you don' want to run a separate program for it. If you need more vertical screen while browsing internet, press F11 to remove the top and bottom strips of the browser, press F11 to return back to the normal mode.
Also, the touchpad is not etched enough so it's hard to tell when you get outside of it. It often happens to me and I realize it only when tapping stops working.
2. It would be nice to be able to tilt the screen more than 45 degrees back. That's necessary if the netbook is at the level of your navel for some reason like a low desk/high chair etc. You don't need more than 45 degrees if the netbook is usually at the level of your chest.
3. The top of the blue and black netbook is GLOSSY ugh .... and makes fingerprints visible, not too bad though. A metallic matte finish not prone to fingerprints would be nicer. The white NC10 is reported to have pearly matte finish on the lid and no fingerprints problem.
4. The borders of the screen could be thinner like the sexier design of Lenovo S10.
5. It would be nice if Samsung doesn't include software that doesn't work at all or is useless like the Samsung Update, the program that supposedly has to keep your drivers updated automatically. At the end I had to go to the Samsung site and update manually.
6. Many people reported two hard to see blotches in the lower left quadrant of the screen close to the center. These are just pressure points from something behind the screen. Samsung fixes those with no charge. Mine were so hard to see I wouldn't bother sending the Sammy back because of those. In fact I was looking for them and didn't find any the first few days. After a while I noticed them at certain viewing positions on the blue windows startup screen or on white backgrounds.
These so far were minor nuisances. Now the two major problems:
7. The speakers are so weak that I can hardly hear them even at maximum volume. It's ok to listen to music in a quiet room but forget about watching and COMPREHENDING WELL streaming Netflix movies. The sound is perfect though on headphones so I guess I will have to use those when watching movies. The excuse the netbook is too small to put slightly bigger and better speakers is lame. Other netbooks of similar size don't suffer of such a low volume speakers.
8. Some of the NC10 netbooks come with the infamous Fujitsu hard drive. It is annoyingly noisy when it parks the head or when Windows programs like your antivirus cause writing to it every 5 seconds, you WILL hear it. There is a workaround for the often head parking - use utility like Netbook Hardware Control to set the hard drive to 'maximum performance' i.e. forbid parking the head. The other problem, the frequent audible writing on the hard drive is unavoidable though, hard drives are made to be written on .... If that bothers you, you will have to have the hard drive replaced with a less noisy one. That's what I did today and will tell you what the result was when I get it back ... If you don't get the noisy Fujitsu drive (the Toshiba drives shipped with this netbook are reported quiet), your Samsung NC10 will be very quiet since the fan is very silent.
I hope flaws 7 and 8 do not stop you from buying this netbook, it really is the best on the current market even with the above problems. The other netbooks also have small touchpads and have similar problems in the nuisance category. Lenovo S10 for example has a noisy fan that starts and stops often and the letters of its logo fall off LOL according to the Lenovo forum. And don't get me started on the ugly 6-cell battery for Lenovo S10 - it kills the whole nice design for which people buy it in first place.
